Nóra GEIGER Historic gardens - abroad (3) The Italian Riviera „the jewel of botany”(Summary) The garden of Hanbury was created in 1867 in Ventimiglia by an English family who was devoted to nature. The advantageous situation of the garden and the mild climate (temperature very rarely drops under 0°C even in winter) made it possible to establish plants from all over the world. The garden today, is a rear collection of plants, which is unique in Europe. The garden was built with a mutual effort of plants man, agronomist and even landscape painters. It is their success that the garden today proudly housing 5800 different plant species, a nice mixture of ornamental plants, herbs and fruiting plants. |
