Dániel SZABÓ Historic gardens – abroad The Green Park of London(Summary) The Green Park, one of the smaller parks of the English capital, is situated in the city, near Buckingham Palace. It has a relatively simple lay-out without any flower beds, water features or pavilions. The only landmark of the park is the Canadian Monument which commemorates the death of Canadian soldiers in World War I-II. Close to this Monument one finds one of the main entrances of the park, the highly ornate Canada Gate. This is the terminal of the main axis of Green Park, of the double avenue of magnificent trees, the Broad Walk. The park best loved treasure, beside the ancient trees, are the hundreds of daffodils that bloom in early spring. The big, open green is a highly valued recreational area. Tired onlookers and visitors can enjoy the massive wooden benches and relax, shake off the stresses of the City on one of the numerous sun beds the park provides. Green Park is also popular with squirrels that by now got use to and live peacefully together with the visitors. Green Park, together with St. James Park and Hyde Park, forms a considerably large green space in central London. The Park is maintained by The Royal Parks, who is responsible for the day to day maintenance of the green and also provides information signage and organises events. |
